The pathology of collecting task（draft）

After watching the video about toy collecting called , I certainly felled the power of passion of collecting-According this video.
Owain started collecting toys since he was a boy, and he had a huge quantity of toy, just as the saying 'the taste of collection is like a game played with utter passion.'.I still remember I cannot keep every things in my room because of the sizeof space of my room, so I only have one at home for memorising. I guest the reason why a true collector can successfully to collect one thing is because they see the special ,which can bring the colletor a lot emotional meaning, on that kind of object. It's like the writing in the essay,'the passion for an object lead to its being construct as god's special hand work.'
Toys are children's dream and dependence. in the other word, toy can remind people the pure and lovely time.according to the video, owain desired to open a toy museum, which make me think about target audience of the museum. Usually, most of the playing object inside already have been made for a long time. So in my opinion,maybe a toy museum is more meaningful to adults than children.

stitch block

      I have to admit I didn't under what  'stitch' really is before I had the first lesson, and I always  think it is a part of the print. Unquestionably,  stitch tutor showed us different techniques to make our sample which I like the 'burning' one most. The effect is quite impressive, so I tried to use burning to be part of my experiment.

    Various burning point of fabric are the most important thing I need to notice. On the first day, experiment showed  that latex is a kind of inflammable material, but the plastic and polyester are not one of them. So basically, I tried to make pattern（trace) on the PVC/latex by using heating of iron and burn some dyed polyester .

    Then I embroidered a few dots  which is like the pattern on the painting and burning agin.the thread were shiny after burning) By accident, I dropped  some wax on the fabric then I realised how similar the wax and pattern were.so combining them together started to be my aim on thursday.

    During these 4-day-experiment, I found  it is too weird that I put wax and fabric together, if I don't make some change. Even the colour and texture looks like the same, they donnot have some kind of graduation. Fortunately, tutor gave me some suggestion about melting wax, and I had new inspiration:melting wax on pieces of polyester in 3D effect.

   4 sample in different way by using this technique.


 

Horse movement (visiting the national army museum)

Horse movement

Horse, a kind of creature which be a transportation and companion with people in hundreds of year, are showed in the national military museum in these time. Of course, the   display called 'war horse' is not just about horse, it's mainly surround the novel called 'war horse' which is very popular in these time.


The theme (horse movement ) I have chosen is out of passion of horse.I'm fond of them, especially the clear and melodious footstep. every time I hear the 'tik tok 'on the road, it like I back to that long, old historical story.

1.handspring puppet
      The object which are displayed in the inside of room is the one of stage property on 'war horse' show.the puppet seen to be made of wires and nets. this is the most unique handspring puppet I ever seen,(' Tom morris who keen to bring the skill of hand spring  puppet company to the national theatre's stage' wrote on the board )they are controlled by actors though 'rein' which is acturelly hidden string for the puppet. Actors controll them though these make the ' horse' more lively and attractive, which means, they pull and push to express the emotion of the horse.

2. Shadow puppet of the horse
      Another theatre production of war horse(consist of iron), which are projected above the action on the screen in a different way which looks like a piece torn paper.'this particular shadow puppet' said on the board, 'help to emphasise the impact of mechanisation during first world war and the power and weight of the tank in comparison to the horse.' as we can see we can watch the story though these little Piece of 'paper' , when the time the horse start moving, we can think it like carton with black and white.

3. Shoes for hoof
   Some hoof are display in museum, which can protect horses to make sure they can walk on the street, are nessera for the war horses (and the others). The sound of ' tik tok' is from their work. From some angle, we can hear the frequency of the sound to jugde a horse's movement so that we can know the character of the hose. It's obvious to seen that the hoof are made of mental (which is heavy), but it doesn't cause any hurt after adapting these.

4 drawing class and a museum visiting  in this week. I found some inspiration in theses which I can use in the next workshop , like: stamp making, painting with ink, etc.
 

Week5conclusion

The things we have learned this week are 'pattern knitting' and 'triangle making',which is another technique to knit something had different shape and in some clear colour. The most of the time we spend on practicing and making final sample. For in case, I made a plan for my practicing and experiment.

   i finished most of knitting just like what the plan had, however, i cannot do all of it as completely the same as my thought . For instance, it's quite difficult to make some cross pattern which might look like mosaic in a way, because I cannot push close stitch forward in the same time.(the yarn will drop off) although it will be quick if I use crochet, I want to make it by using new technique of knitting on knitting machine. So I did a piece first and  casted off it with hole when I finish the row. Then I  continue to knit on it again. It totally different from the first time I thought, but I change to another way.

In fact, there are still some piece that I cannot made as I want. Like: I wanted to knit a lace but it fall.

The plan might be work in this time, but I need to thinking more carefully and clear in the
Next time.

Obviously, we had a substantial, exciting week in the knitting room. We started get in touch with knitting and learned some basic way to knit a fabric on knitting machine

Monday
   As I wrote before, we learn to ‘casting on ’on the machine, and used the ‘transfer stick’ to knit different pattern.

Tuesday
  A new way to knit lace and ‘draw ’colourful fabric, we try to add some yarn and fabric on it to make it look special. I had a problem about knitting. Specifically, I tried to make the pattern of mosaic, but yarn could not be casted on.

Thursday
 Finally, we learned how to casting off, and I knitted a completed piece. But it’s very basic, which means, I need to plan to design the shape and colour on the fabric in this weekend.

In 13th oct, we visited the medicine museum called welcome collection. I found out a lot of inspiration a bout the combination of art and medical, especially the exhibition on the second floor,and the theme called medicine man exhibition which displays various hundreds years of devices is quite ancient and interesting.
  this time I focus on corset, which is the thing I always imagine in the my mind. In my imagination, corset, a kind of fancy personal item,  is only consist with wire and lace, and it's impossible to be cause of the torture to western ladies about 400 hundred years.

  According to the label beside, it said that 'it is not clear the corset was worn in order to minimise the waist or as an orthopaedic device.' .But obliviously, corset crush internal organ if people war it in along time. It is supported by serial book, and one of them called<the corset a cultural history>. In that book, I realise that corset has long history from late Renaissance into twentieth century, and it's the most controversial garment in the history of fashion. Surprisingly, 'it is major cause of I'll health and even death.'

However, there are still had some advantage if we see it in the other side of it, the positive connotation ' of social status, artistry, respectability, beauty, youth and erotic allure.

In fact, there is  a similar thing which also create pain for beauty called 'San cun Jin Liam ' in China.  In the ancient time, Chinese women's feet must be bound ,as the same as the '18 inches' waist in western. Nevertheless, these kind of 'pretty little bondage'  bring millions of suffering to human being in the ancient time. I hope , starting now, we can actuarially make some item helpful and health, not something make people tortured.

Kniting

 Today we started our first technique block--kniting.Generally, these is a little bit different with the machine i used before on the starting point, and also, i finally understood how to use the tansfer stick to make a pattern on the kniting piece.
 we used to start kniting straitly which means we didn't have use our hand to make a start. I quite confused when I saw it. But after knowing these, i found it's much neater and easier to controll.


In the afternoon we maked some hand- kniting and I learned to how to knit 'bubble' which is a kind of  kniting tachnique in these time.   

POP UP- Obeject choosing

The bear is a kind of hand puppet which is a special way that adult talk to children. A fluffy animal can make children be calm and be easier to listen what their parents(or the others)taking. Even the rest of objects in my collection is part tradition childhood memorise, which means, people (children) used to use them to make a story to tell,(a little theatre in their house). I'm attractived by the pattern and the texture which are filled with the old and sweet atmosphere of children's playing. The connection  between is their imagination, Which makes various story by play toys on their own tiny space, which is compare with the real world. Because of the these toys, they help children to finish their dream.

Rough guide edit week

to make 100 rough guide books, we started choose page in what we were draw in our A5 sketch books. I'm so surprise that people choose the page which is inspire of the underground from my sketch book.

I added some tea water ,which is the inspiration from the pattern on the block, on papers during the drawing time.

In consider of the print colour of 100 photocopies has to be black and white, I made some little changes in each page I chosed .

museum of childhood(draft)

According to the lecture, I visited the museum on Saturday, and I tried to think about the display in that place.

The hall which painted in some pure light colour makes people think it really sweet and fantasy. I think that can make children be more relaxing when they visit. Especially the time I into the entrance, it’s a toy factory rather than a museum.

The museum is filled with toy corners and film in the front of the museum, and shows how attractive and creative they are.

In the central of the museum, there's a toy store with some Olympic mascots. And the objects are around it, which make the display of exhibition is totally like the shape of 'U'.

On right hand side, there are series mirrors which show us the theme called moving toys. A kind of spin roll which consist of mirror and serial picture for playing carton is next to it.

Obviously, that's is a strong connection between moving picture and toy camera, so the electronic moving toys, including toy train, 3D glasses and electronic car,  are behind spin.

When we mention about the moving toys, puppet also can be one of the members, that's the reason why they are at the end of the room, which links to the 'playing grow up' toy on the left hand side.

On the whole, we can see the visiting process on the ground floor is like: moving-electronic-controlling toy-playing grow up-custom, and each of toys have their similar point.

ROUGH GUIDE

Rough guide

In the past two weeks, we started our first project called rough guide which is about finding interesting things in three specified street( Piccadilly, Bond street and Dover street) to make a ‘simple introduction’.

I quite interested in the floor on the way of the road. Although most of them are constituted by square made of stone, over years remains can tell the street long time history to everyone in its own special way. Sometime we can recognize the road and know where we are if we notice marks.

Tate Britain visit (draft)

After visiting the the new exhibition called "" in Tate britain. I realise I totally focus on holman's painting which is the most colourful open in my opinion. The painter used various but suitable colour in one painting which be more attractive,especially the colour on human's cloth.
After searching this artist online ,i found some information about him. He paid a lot of attention when he draw 'fabric pattern' in each painting with some vivid colour. ('His paintings were notable for their great attention to detail, vivid colour and elaborate symbolism.' from wiki)

, I found that The features ofWilliam Hunt Holman's painting were influenced by the writings of 'John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle, according to whom the world itself should be read as a system of visual signs. '( from wiki)
